I began writing this track as a teenager based on the struggles I saw my brother face as a gay man. After my own challenging & inspirational journey which lead me to the streets, I finished it while living in Hope Mission, a women's shelter in Edmonton AB, Canada in 2002.

I wrote it as an acapella tune & always perform it as such, however this recording (titled "Into the Light") required me to write piano for it in 2010. I've dreamed about this song helping people & that hope came true when it was chosen as the theme song for the Bissell Center's 100 year celebration of service, working to eliminate poverty in Edmonton.

I believe we all have the power to help & encourage people, including ourselves, to step out of the darkness & into the light.

VERSE 1
A child ran up to me today
Grabbed my hand and without a word
Pulled me down an alleyway
Where I stood confused
He disappeared beneath some stairs
Then with a smile waved me to come
I crawled behind him whispering a prayer
“Please don’t let this be his home”

The darkness blinded me not near as much
As the tears pooled in my eyes
How could innocence be trapped like this
What could have severed the ties

One man’s addiction had him begging for change
Second wore the rainbow with pride
Woman sold her body nightly for a hit
Fear locked their freedom inside

Bruises fade away as time goes by
And the pain of broken bones subsides
It’s in their hearts the greater scars remain
When fear and ignorance collide
